The primary objective of a lightning arrester is to provide a low-resistance pathway for the surge of current generated by a lightning strike, allowing the energy to dissipate harmlessly into the ground.

 

Understanding the Mechanism:

Lightning arresters operate on the principle of providing a preferential pathway for electrical surges. These surges, commonly referred to as overvoltages, can occur due to a variety of reasons, with lightning strikes being one of the most potent sources. When lightning strikes a structure or the ground near an electrical system, it generates an immense amount of energy that propagates through the system's wiring. How Lightning Arresters Work:

The core functionality of a lightning arrester revolves around its ability to rapidly conduct excessive currents to the ground. However, when subjected to an overvoltage, such as that generated by a lightning strike, the resistance of these components drops dramatically. This sudden decrease in resistance allows the arrester to divert the excess current away from the electrical system and toward the grounding system.

 

The Discharge Pathway:

To facilitate the rapid discharge of overvoltage, lightning arresters are connected in parallel to the electrical equipment they are meant to protect. When an overvoltage event occurs, the arrester detects the sudden increase in voltage and begins to conduct. The surge current is then directed through the low-resistance arrester components, effectively creating a path of least resistance for the energy to flow. This path bypasses the sensitive equipment, preventing any potential damage.

 

Types of Lightning Arresters:

There are two primary types of lightning arresters: line discharge lightning arresters and ground discharge lightning arresters. Line discharge arresters are situated in the proximity of the equipment they protect, while ground discharge arresters are located on the high points of structures or overhead lines to intercept lightning strikes before they reach the protected equipment.
