IGNOU Assignment Pattern 2026: What to Write, and How to Submit Correctly

IGNOU does not evaluate learners solely through a final examination. Every theory course includes a continuous evaluation component built around Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). If you do not submit your assignments, you cannot appear in the Term-End Examination for that course, regardless of how well you perform in the exam itself. Understanding the assignment pattern is therefore not optional. It is the first administrative requirement of your programme.

This guide explains how the IGNOU assignment pattern works, what each assignment contains, how marks are awarded, and how to avoid the formatting and submission errors that lead to zero marks.

What the IGNOU Assignment Pattern Is

The IGNOU assignment pattern is a continuous evaluation system. Each course you register for comes with a prescribed assignment booklet. You write answers by hand, submit them to your Study Centre, and an academic counsellor evaluates them. The marks you receive contribute to your final grade for that course.

Assignments are not optional practice work. They are assessed components of your degree. The University treats submission as a pre-requisite for appearing in the theory term-end examination for the respective course.

The 30:70 Evaluation Split

IGNOU divides evaluation for each theory course into two parts:

Component

Weightage

Who evaluates

Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs)

30%

Academic counsellor at the Study Centre

Term-End Examination (TEE)

70%

University examination system

In the final result, assignments carry 30% weightage, while the term-end examination carries 70%.

This split means assignments are not a formality. A learner who scores 50 out of 100 in the TEE but 90 out of 100 in assignments will have a higher final score than a learner who scores 60 in the TEE but 40 in assignments. The difference is substantial because the assignment component is fully within your control. You write it at home, with access to your course materials, at your own pace.

How Many TMAs You Need to Write

The number of assignments depends on the credit value of the course, not on the programme as a whole. IGNOU follows a standard pattern:

Course credit value

Number of TMAs

Six-credit course

Three TMAs

Four-credit course

Two TMAs

This pattern applies across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Some programmes, such as the Bachelor of Arts (Facility and Services Management), prescribe one TMA per course rather than following the credit-based rule. Always check the Programme Guide for your specific programme before assuming the general pattern applies.

The Three Types of Assignment Questions

IGNOU assignment booklets typically divide each course's TMA into three categories. Each category tests a different skill and expects a different style of answer.

Descriptive Category Questions (DCQs) are essay-type questions. They require a structured answer with an introduction, a main discussion, and a conclusion. These questions test whether you can explain a concept systematically and coherently. DCQs are usually the longest answers in the assignment and carry the highest individual marks.

Middle Category Questions (MCQs) require analysis rather than description. You are expected to compare, contrast, or distinguish between concepts. The answers are shorter than DCQs but demand precision. You need to identify the key differences or relationships and state them clearly without unnecessary elaboration.

Short Category Questions (SCQs) test recall of specific information: names, dates, definitions, or brief explanations. These answers should be direct and concise. The goal is accuracy, not depth.

Some programmes also include practical, reflective, or activity-oriented questions within these categories. The assignment booklet for your specific course will state the exact number of questions and the marks for each.

Front Page Format and Writing Requirements

The first page of every assignment must carry specific identifying information. Missing or incorrect front page details can delay evaluation or cause your assignment to be rejected.

Write the following in the top right-hand corner of the first page: Enrollment number, name, full address, signature, and date.

Write the following on the left-hand corner of the first page: Programme title, course code, and course title.

The top of your response sheet should look like this:

PROGRAMME TITLE:

ENROLMENT NO.:

COURSE CODE:

NAME:

COURSE TITLE:

ADDRESS:

SIGNATURE:

DATE:

Every assignment must be handwritten. Typed or printed assignments are not accepted for most programmes. Use A4-size ruled or plain paper, write in blue or black ink only, and do not use red ink or decorative pens. Write on both sides of the page with a left margin of approximately 4 cm to allow the evaluator space for comments.

Write each assignment separately. Do not write all assignments for a course in one continuous document. Write the question number before each answer. Tie or staple all pages carefully, and number them at the bottom.

For online submission, scan each course's assignment as a single PDF file containing all answers for that course. The file should not exceed 10 MB. Name the file starting with your enrollment number followed by the course code.

Word Limits and Answer Structure

IGNOU assignment booklets specify approximate word limits for each question. These are not suggestions. Answers that fall significantly short or run far beyond the limit can lose marks.

Common word limits by question type:

Question type

Typical word limit

Long / descriptive answer

500 to 600 words

Middle category answer

250 to 300 words

Short category answer

100 to 250 words

For a six-credit course, the total assignment response often runs to about 1,500 words or ten A4 pages, though the maximum is usually limited to five or six A4 sheets. The assignment booklet for your course will state the exact limits.

A well-structured answer follows this pattern: a brief introduction that states what you will address, a main body organised into logical paragraphs or sections, and a short conclusion that summarises your response. Underline key points if you wish to emphasise them.

Submission Deadlines and Where to Submit

IGNOU operates two admission cycles per year: July cycle and January cycle. Each cycle has corresponding TEE sessions and assignment deadlines.

Admission cycle

TEE session

Assignment deadline

July 2025

June 2026

30 April 2026

January 2026

December 2026

31 October 2026

Deadlines have been extended in past cycles. For the June 2026 TEE, the last date for assignment submission was extended to 31 May 2026 for some programmes. Always check the official IGNOU website or your Regional Centre notice board for the current deadline.

Submit your assignments to the Coordinator of your Study Centre. Do not send them to the Regional Centre or to any other Study Centre unless explicitly instructed. Submitting at the wrong location means your assignment will not be evaluated.

You must obtain a receipt from the Study Centre when you submit your assignments. Keep this receipt safe. Keep a photocopy of every assignment you submit. The Study Centre is required to return your evaluated assignments to you with the counsellor's comments and marks.

Online vs Offline Submission

IGNOU permits both offline and online submission, depending on the mode followed by your Study Centre.

Offline submission: Submit handwritten assignments directly at your Study Centre, either in person or by post. This is the traditional method and remains the default for most programmes.

Online submission: Some Regional Centres provide a Google link or LMS portal for uploading scanned PDFs of handwritten assignments. Online programme learners (those enrolled in IGNOU's online programmes) submit through the LMS portal only.

Do not submit at more than one place. Submitting both offline and online creates duplication and causes evaluation problems. If you have already submitted at your Study Centre, do not submit again through the online link.

Plagiarism and What Happens If You Copy

IGNOU treats plagiarism seriously. Copying from course units, textbooks, online sources, or another learner's assignment without acknowledgement is a serious academic offence.

Assignments found to contain plagiarised material will be marked zero. They will not be accepted or re-evaluated. The University may also initiate disciplinary action against learners who copy from others.

Writing answers in your own words is not just an academic requirement. It is also the most effective preparation for the term-end examination. When you paraphrase concepts rather than copy them, you understand them well enough to write about them in the exam.

Common Mistakes That Cost Marks

Most assignment problems are avoidable. The following errors appear repeatedly:

Using the wrong question paper. Assignment questions change with each admission cycle. Using a previous cycle's question paper means your answers do not match the current questions. Download the correct booklet for your session.

Typing instead of handwriting. Most IGNOU programmes require handwritten assignments. Typed submissions are rejected.

Forgetting front page details. Missing enrolment number, course code, or study centre code can cause your assignment to be misdirected or rejected.

Ignoring word limits. Answers that are too short suggest incomplete preparation. Answers that are too long suggest poor editing and may not be fully evaluated.

Submitting incomplete assignments. If you have not answered all questions, the evaluator cannot award full marks for that assignment.

Missing the deadline. Late submissions may not be evaluated. The University has the right to reject assignments received after the due date.

Using red ink or decorative pens. Blue or black ink only.

How to Check Your IGNOU Assignment Status?

After submission, evaluation typically takes two to three months. You can check your assignment marks through the IGNOU Grade Card.

Steps to check assignment status:

  1. Visit ignou.ac.in.

  2. Open the Student Services section.

  3. Select Results and then Grade Card.

  4. Choose your programme and enter your enrollment number.

  5. Check the assignment column for each course to see whether your marks have been updated.

If your assignment marks have not appeared within nine months of submission, write to your Regional Centre with proof of submission, such as the receipt or a photocopy of the submitted assignment.

FAQs

What is the full form of TMA in IGNOU?

TMA stands for Tutor Marked Assignment. It is the continuous evaluation component of each theory course, written by the learner and evaluated by an academic counsellor at the Study Centre.

How many assignments do I have to write for a six-credit course?

Three TMAs for a six-credit course. Four-credit courses require two TMAs. Some programmes, such as the BA in Facility and Services Management, prescribe one TMA per course regardless of credit value. Check your Programme Guide.

Can I type my IGNOU assignment?

For most programmes, assignments must be handwritten. Typed assignments are not accepted. A small number of programmes may permit typed responses if the learner's handwriting is not legible, but this is an exception, not the norm.

What happens if I do not submit my assignment?

You will not be allowed to appear in the Term-End Examination for that course. Assignment submission is compulsory before the TEE. If you fail to submit, you must wait for the next cycle's assignments.

Where do I submit my IGNOU assignment?

Submit to the Coordinator of your allotted Study Centre. Do not submit at a different Study Centre or at the Regional Centre unless instructed. For online programmes, submit through the LMS portal.

What is the last date for IGNOU assignment submission?

For the June TEE, the deadline is generally 30 April. For the December TEE, it is generally 31 October. Deadlines have been extended in previous cycles, so check the official IGNOU website for the current date.

Can I submit my assignment online?

Some Regional Centres provide online submission links. Online programme learners submit through the LMS portal. If your Study Centre accepts online submissions, scan each course's assignment as a single PDF and upload it. Do not submit both online and offline.

Will I get my evaluated assignment back?

Yes. The Study Centre is required to return your evaluated assignment to you with the counsellor's comments and marks. Collect it and keep it as a record.

What happens if I copy my assignment?

Copied assignments are marked zero and are not re-evaluated. The University may also take disciplinary action. Write all answers in your own words.

How long does it take for assignment marks to appear on the Grade Card?

Evaluation usually takes two to three months. If marks have not appeared within nine months of submission, contact your Regional Centre with proof of submission.
