The Hans Foundation: AIIMS Collaborate to Establish Early Childhood Development & Neurorehabilitation Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi

The Hans Foundation, in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence and Advanced Research for Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Child Neurology Division, Department of Pediatrics at AIIMS, has signed an agreement to establish the "Holding Hand in Magical Years: Early Childhood Development & Neurorehabilitation Centre." This groundbreaking initiative aims to provide children with state-of-the-art facilities to help them reach their maximum developmental potential based on their individual capabilities. The project is expected to benefit approximately 10,000-12,000 children annually.
Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are prevalent in India, affecting around 12% of the population, with almost one-fifth of these individuals experiencing multiple NDDs. Shockingly, around 45% of children with NDDs are at risk of poor development due to a lack of identification and limited access to treatment.
Mr. Sandeep J Kapur, CEO of The Hans Foundation, expressed the organization's commitment to empowering people with disabilities and enabling them to lead independent and productive lives within their communities through holistic interventions. The collaboration with AIIMS aims to address these issues by establishing a state-of-the-art facility that will conduct screening and early identification of children with developmental delays and various neurodevelopmental disorders, including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and specific learning disabilities (SLD). The center will provide early intervention and supportive services, constituting a multidisciplinary approach to care. The ultimate goal is to ensure that individuals with disabilities can lead meaningful lives in an inclusive society with high humanistic values.
The project is a joint effort between The Hans Foundation and AIIMS, with THF directly implementing the program under the technical and monitoring support of AIIMS within the AIIMS campus. Prof. Sheffali Gulati has been designated as the nodal officer from AIIMS for this project. The program will involve experts from various disciplines who will provide individualized services tailored to each child's specific needs.
Prof. M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS, highlighted the importance of comprehensive and intensive care systems for managing and reducing the impact of disabling or medical conditions on individuals' lives. The center will provide customized services, including holistic assessments and evaluations. Additionally, a wide range of multidisciplinary services will be offered, such as speech and language therapy, counseling and training for families, diagnosis and treatment, nursing services, nutrition services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and psychological services. Supportive services, including the provision of assistive aids through schemes like the ADIP scheme or The Hans Foundation, caregiver training, tools for home-based interventions, community engagement, and monitoring, will also be incorporated.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at AIIMS, New Delhi, on July 1, 2023, in the presence of AIIMS representatives, including Prof. M Srinivas, Director, Prof. Minu Bajpai, Dean of Academics, Mr. N K Sharma, Senior Financial Advisor, Dr. Anoop Kr Daga, Hospital Administration, Prof. Sheffali Gulati, Faculty in Charge of the Child Neurology Division, Department of Pediatrics, and Prof. Pankaj Hari from the Department of Pediatrics. The representatives from The Hans Foundation included Mr. Sandeep J Kapur, CEO, and Ms. Shabina Bano, Senior Program Manager.
This collaboration between The Hans Foundation and AIIMS marks a significant step towards providing cutting-edge neurorehabilitation services and early childhood development support to children in need. It represents a collective effort to improve the lives of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders and ensure they receive comprehensive care, enabling them to reach their full potential and live with dignity and humanistic values.
