CISCE Schools Embrace Experiential Learning for Engaging Classrooms

The Council For The Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is taking a significant step towards transforming the learning experience in its schools by introducing experiential learning. This new approach aims to engage students in hands-on experiences followed by guided reflections, creating a strong connection between theoretical concepts and their real-world relevance.
To facilitate the implementation of experiential learning, a module has been uploaded on the CISCE website, providing guidance to teachers on this innovative method of teaching and learning. In a notice issued by the chief executive and secretary Gerry Arathoon, the introduction of experiential learning was announced, stating, "'Learning by Doing' or Experiential Learning is an innovative pedagogy... This in turn ensures active engagement of students for deeper conceptual understanding as well as internalization of the knowledge, skills, and values that are being developed through these joyful experiences."
Experiential learning is aligned with the principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes systemic reforms to ensure quality access and engagement for all learners. Schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have also suggested incorporating experiential learning as part of the NEP.
Experiential learning activities can take various forms, such as field trips to places like zoos or birdwatching trips, group work inside and outside the classroom, and open-ended discussion activities. A detailed module has been made available on the CISCE website, guiding teachers to identify and design activities that meet students' needs and effectively communicate key concepts in the curriculum. Teachers are encouraged to identify specific areas where experiential learning can be introduced.
The principles of experiential learning emphasize the need for highly engaging classrooms that prioritize collaboration and cooperation, moving away from the traditional lecture-based and homework-centered approach. While some schools may have already incorporated certain hands-on activities, the introduction of experiential learning provides a structured format to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
Seema Sapru, principal of Heritage School, highlights the long-lasting impact of hands-on experiences, stating, "Whenever one does anything hands-on, it stays for life. So experiential learning is much better than just the conventional method for it is not about only reading and writing, but also experiencing it." This approach recognizes that learning becomes more meaningful and memorable when students can actively engage with the subject matter.
Roopkotha Sarkar, principal of La Martiniere for Girls School, emphasizes that experiential learning will primarily focus on doing and learning. Every learning experience should be accompanied by an actual hands-on activity. This can be achieved through projects, excursions, and various experiments that allow students to gain a clear understanding of the concepts being taught.
By introducing experiential learning, CISCE schools are paving the way for a more engaging and dynamic learning environment. Students will have the opportunity to connect theory with practice, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the subjects they study. This progressive approach aligns with the evolving educational landscape and places an emphasis on holistic development, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
As CISCE schools embark on this new journey, experiential learning is expected to enhance the overall learning experience, creating a generation of students who are not only knowledgeable but also equipped with practical skills and a strong sense of real-world application.
