Akarshana Sathish: The 12-Year-Old Library Champion Who Inspires

In the heart of Hyderabad, a remarkable 12-year-old girl named Akarshana Sathish, a student at Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet, is making waves with her incredible initiative. Against all odds and at such a young age, Akarshana has not only opened seven libraries but has also garnered recognition from prominent figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Former Vice President of India, Shri Venkaiah Naidu. Her journey is a testament to the power of determination and the impact one young individual can have on her community.
Akarshana's story of creating libraries began in 2021 during a visit to the MNJ Cancer Children's Hospital. It was during this visit that she witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by children undergoing cancer treatment, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"When my parents and I visited the MNJ cancer children to provide food, the children undergoing cancer treatment met me daily and asked me to bring them coloring and drawing sheets because there was a complete lockdown due to Covid," recalls Akarshana.
Moved by the children's requests, she decided to bring them a few books the following day. However, the demand for books grew rapidly as more kids sought the solace of reading during their difficult times. It was at that moment that Akarshana made a life-changing decision – she would ask her school and apartment community to contribute any of their good old books in good condition to provide these young readers with more books to escape into.
"I received a lot of excellent feedback from them, and I ended up collecting 5836 books. Hence, I started my journey with a vision of 'Empowering Minds through Libraries' as my project to create ten libraries by December 2023," shares Akarshana.
Akarshana's determination and her project's noble vision quickly gained attention. Notable figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Former Vice President Shri Venkaiah Naidu applauded her efforts, recognizing the immense value of her work in promoting education and empowering young minds.
Her initiative not only addresses the immediate need for books and reading materials for children undergoing cancer treatment but also serves as a source of inspiration for countless others. Akarshana's story demonstrates that age is no barrier to making a meaningful impact on society.
Through her libraries, she not only provides access to a world of knowledge and imagination but also offers solace, hope, and a sense of normalcy to children facing serious health challenges. Her act of kindness and generosity shines as a beacon of light in the lives of these young readers, showing them that even in the darkest times, there is a world of wonder and adventure waiting to be explored through books.
Furthermore, Akarshana's project underscores the power of community and collaboration. It is a testament to what can be achieved when people come together to support a noble cause. Her school, apartment community, and countless individuals rallied behind her vision, donating books and resources to make her dream of establishing libraries a reality.
In conclusion, Akarshana Sathish, the 12-year-old library champion, has not only created libraries but has also sown the seeds of empowerment and education in the hearts of those she has touched. Her remarkable journey is a reminder that individuals, regardless of their age, can make a significant difference in the lives of others. Through her dedication, compassion, and vision, Akarshana has become a source of inspiration and hope, proving that the love of reading can truly change lives.
