Empowering Women Health Workers: Bridging Immunization Barriers for Children in Maharashtra

In a quiet corner of Maharashtra's Thane district, an hour's journey from the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, a remarkable transformation is unfolding. This transformation is powered by a group of dedicated and resourceful women who have broken down societal and psychological barriers to make essential vaccinations accessible for the children in their community. Led by Chaya Khobragade, the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) stationed in Nandikinara, a lower-middle-class neighborhood in Bhiwandi, these health workers have become champions of child healthcare, working in collaboration with faith leaders and concerned citizens.

Chaya Khobragade, at the age of 35, is the dynamic force behind this initiative. Alongside her are Medha Chavan, the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA), and Tehrin Ansari, the Community Health Volunteer (CHV). Together, they have dedicated over a decade to establishing a well-accepted and efficiently managed immunization program mandated under Mission Indradhanush. Launched by the Government of India in 2014, this initiative aims to achieve a 90 percent full immunization coverage rate nationwide, with a particular focus on high-risk and underserved communities.
